What Ancient Mythology Knew About Vitamin C and Longevity

Iðunn kept the gods young with a fruit. Not a potion. Not a ritual. A fruit. She is the reason this site exists. And the longer I looked at what she was actually guarding, the more I understood why.
Every civilization that built something lasting — Norse, Greek, Celtic, Indian, Chinese — reached for the same image when they tried to explain longevity. Not medicine. Not magic. A fruit, grown from the earth, tended with reverence, guarded by gods.
The Norse had Iðunn’s golden apples. The Greeks had the garden of the Hesperides. The Celts had the immortal orchards beyond the western sea. The Chinese had the Peaches of Immortality ripening once every three thousand years. The Indians had something smaller, more unassuming, and — as it turns out — more extraordinary than any of them.
They weren’t telling the same story by coincidence.
Amla — Born From the Tears of God
In Hindu mythology, amla — the Indian gooseberry — did not simply grow from the earth. It emerged from the tears of Lord Vishnu, falling to the ground during deep meditation. The amla tree became so sacred that Vishnu himself is said to dwell within it. It is worshipped on its own festival day. Emperor Ashoka — one of the greatest rulers in human history — chose half an amla as his final gift to the Buddhist sangha as he lay dying. Not gold. Not land. Half a berry.
The ancient Ayurvedic texts called it a Rasayana — a rejuvenator. A fruit that promotes longevity, restores balance, and rebuilds the body from within. The Charaka Samhita, one of the oldest medical texts in existence, prescribed it for virtually everything.
For thousands of years people simply believed the ancients were being poetic.
Then science caught up.
A single amla berry contains 600 to 700 milligrams of vitamin C. One berry. For context — an orange contains about 53 milligrams per 100 grams. Amla contains the equivalent of roughly twenty oranges worth of vitamin C in a fruit the size of a marble. And unlike most vitamin C sources, amla’s vitamin C is bonded with tannins that protect it from heat and light — meaning it retains its potency even when dried, cooked or powdered.
The ancients weren’t being poetic. They were being precise.
Nature’s Full Range
Amla is not alone. Camu camu — a small Amazonian berry — contains up to 3,000 milligrams of vitamin C per 100 grams, roughly sixty times more than an orange. Acerola cherry contains up to 1,644 milligrams per cup. Sea buckthorn — fed to Pegasus on the slopes of Mount Olympus according to Greek mythology, its very Latin name Hippophae meaning “shining horse” — contains up to 2,500 milligrams per 100 grams.
These are not exotic outliers. They are reminders of what vitamin C actually looks like in nature when nothing has interfered with it.
Which makes what happened to the apple all the more striking.
What We Did To The Apple
There is a reason the old saying was “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” — and it has nothing to do with the apples in your supermarket.
A 2003 USDA survey measured the phytonutrient content of hundreds of wild and cultivated apple varieties. One wild species contained 15 times more phytonutrients than a Golden Delicious. Another contained 65 times more. The Sikkim apple native to Nepal had 100 times more phytonutrients than our most popular commercial varieties.
One hundred times more.
When that saying was coined, people were eating small, bitter, nutritionally dense fruit that bore almost no resemblance to the giant, sweet, shelf-stable product sold in stores today. Centuries of selecting for size, sweetness, appearance and durability quietly stripped out the very compounds that made the apple worth eating in the first place. Research comparing produce from 1950 to produce from 1999 found differences in vitamin and mineral content of up to 38 percent across fruits and vegetables.
The food looks the same. The label says the same thing. The nutrition is a fraction of what it was.
The apple a day that kept the doctor away no longer exists in any supermarket in America.
What Modern Research Says About Vitamin C and Longevity
Vitamin C is not simply an immune booster. The research on its role in longevity is substantially more interesting than the common cold narrative suggests.
Vitamin C is essential for collagen synthesis — the structural protein that holds skin, blood vessels, bones and connective tissue together. Without adequate vitamin C collagen production fails. This is why scurvy — severe vitamin C deficiency — causes wounds that won’t heal, gums that bleed, and blood vessels that rupture. The body literally falls apart.
At adequate levels vitamin C functions as a powerful antioxidant, neutralizing free radicals that damage DNA and accelerate cellular aging. Higher vitamin C intake has been associated in research with reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, certain cancers, and age related cognitive decline.
Perhaps most relevant to longevity — vitamin C appears to protect telomeres, the protective caps on chromosomes that shorten with age. Shorter telomeres are associated with accelerated aging and earlier death. Higher vitamin C intake is associated with longer telomere length.
The ancients who revered vitamin C rich fruits for extending life were not wrong. The mechanism is just more precise than they knew to articulate.
The Irony We Need to Talk About
Here is something worth sitting with.
We took one of nature’s most potent longevity foods — the apple — and through centuries of commercial selection quietly drained it of almost everything that made it powerful. The fruit still exists. It just doesn’t do what it once did. And most people have no idea.
The supplement industry has managed to do something similar in a fraction of the time.
The Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 created a regulatory environment where supplements can reach store shelves without proving their quality to the FDA first. The burden falls on the government to prove a product is unsafe after the fact. One study of 121 supplement products found that 5 percent exceeded safe arsenic limits, 2 percent had excess lead, cadmium and aluminum, and 1 percent had excess mercury. In June 2019 the FDA seized 300,000 dietary supplement bottles for excessive lead contamination.
You can spend money on vitamin C every day for years and be getting something closer to sawdust than medicine — and you would have no way of knowing.
The ancient apple and the modern supplement have something in common. Both looked fine from the outside. Both had the same name. Neither delivered what was promised.
What I Actually Use — And Why

What To Look For
When buying vitamin C look for third party testing verification — USP, NSF International or equivalent. This means an independent lab confirmed what’s on the label is in the bottle and nothing harmful is present.
Look for an established brand with a documented quality promise — not a random listing with no verifiable manufacturing standards.
Consider the form. Standard ascorbic acid works well for most people. Buffered calcium ascorbate is gentler on sensitive stomachs. Liposomal vitamin C — encapsulated in fat-based vesicles — has shown in early research to improve absorption, though clinical outcome studies are still developing.
